Workout Wednesday: The Animal Flow Workout

Workout-Wed-Body-Weight-Featured

The human body, as we’re all aware, has a number of natural movements. We use them every day when we walk, run, and, well, live. What many people may not realize though, is that these movements play an important role in keeping you healthy and in shape.

In workouts that we’ve covered on our blog the past, we’ve focused on everything from yoga and CrossFit routines to workouts that are specific to certain muscle groups. This week, we’ve got something a little different for you.

This Week’s Workout

Primal-style workouts–the types that focus on your body’s natural movements–have been growing in popularity this year, and for good reasons. These workouts offer a much more fun workout because you’re not repeating the same motions over and over again, as you would if you were, say, lifting weights. Primal-style workouts also still challenge your entire body, giving you an all-over workout that is anything but ordinary and what you may be used to.

This week, our workout comes from SHAPE Magazine, Lashaun Dale, and Mike Fitch, the creator of the Animal Flow class found at EQUINOX gyms.

This workout may be different than what you’re used to at the gym, but rest assured that your whole body is still getting a great workout.

With these simple moves, you’re benefiting in the following ways:

  • Strength and flexibility
  • Power and endurance

The good news? You’re doing these things with nothing but your body weight! How gratifying is that?

Cool-Down & Recovery

For a quick and effective cool-down this week, give jumping jacks a try. The motion of a jumping jack is great for working your lower body, as well as your upper body. A simple 5 or 10 is ideal.

After you’ve completed your cool-down, don’t forget to supplement with a healthy amount of protein and water. Replenishing your electrolytes is important as well. Below are some of my staples for a proper recovery:

Have you done any other primal-style workouts? How do they work for you? We’d love to hear your stories. Please leave us a comment below!
