If you’re anything like me, you likely ate way too much lasagna, ham, mashed potatoes and sweets over the past few
days months and probably have a New Year’s resolution that has something to do with a healthier diet and more exercise.
At the start of every new year, many people vow to eat healthier, lose weight and get in better shape. While that’s all fine and dandy the problem is that some people will turn to ridiculous fad diets which ultimately set them up for failure. Take the Atkins Diet or the South Beach Diet for example–how is a diet with no carbohydrates healthy? It isn’t!
However, there is one certain diet that has been receiving a lot of buzz lately–the Mediterranean Diet. The Mediterranean diet uses basic healthy eating principles–more fruits and vegetables, less (or no) junk food.
The Mediterranean Diet Basics
The Mediterranean Diet emphasizes a few basic components.
- Eating mostly plant-based foods. This can include vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains and nuts.
- Replacing butter with healthy fats.
- Using herbs and spices to flavor foods.
- Limiting red meat and eating fish and poultry at least two times per week.
Pretty simple, right? The Mediterranean Diet focuses on clean, healthy eating. No gimmicks, no quick fixes.
There has been a lot of talk lately surrounding the Mediterranean diet and heart disease. The Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease. It may also help reduce the risk of cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. The diet itself focuses on choosing healthier types of fat. It promotes the use of olive oil, a monounsaturated fat that may help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

The Mediterranean diet is not a fad diet. You won’t lose 7 pounds in a week (which, by the way, is not healthy) but it does promote lifelong health and well-being.
