Do you smoke? Are you dying to quit? (No pun intended!)  Today is World No Tobacco Day, a World Health Organization campaign and when WHO talk, YOU should listen - “Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death. This year, more than 5 million people will die from a tobacco-related heart attack, stroke, cancer, lung ailment or other disease. That does not include the more than 600,000 people – more than a quarter of them children – who will die from exposure to second-hand smoke. The annual death toll from the global epidemic of tobacco use could rise to 8 million by 2030. Having killed 100 million people during the 20th century, tobacco use could kill 1 billion during the 21st century.” Today is World No Tobacco Day  and the World Health Organization is on a global mission.

Did you catch the sentence about preventable cause of death?

The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)”  and it’s the world’s foremost tobacco control instrument. It’s an international treaty with more than 170 members and it’s a formidable, collaborative, effort that “reaffirms the right of all people to the highest standard of health and provides new legal dimensions for cooperation in tobacco control.”

Ever see the shocking YouTube video of the two year old Indonesian toddler, Aldi Suganda, who smokes more than 40 cigarettes a day? How could this happen? While smoking in the US may be declining, according to the WHO, that’s not the case in many developing countries.  There’s a lot of politics in tobacco. While the World Health Organization is working to affirm the rights of all people to better health (translation: prevent people from smoking in the first place, or helping them quit), countries are reaping millions of dollars on the taxes they collect from cigarette purchases, and in truth, spend very little on anti-smoking campaigns.  You’ll learn more in the full WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic.

In addition to the dangers we know about second-hand smoke, Science Daily cites  the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that calls our attention now to “third-hand smoke” – which is basically the grimy, smelly, film left by smokers, that clings to everything in a building, or vehicle, like your clothing, furniture, etc., and it interacts with the common air pollutant nitrous acid, which in turn, produces dangerous carcinogens. Smoking is bad!
