Common Back-to-School Illnesses

Isn’t it funny how the same illnesses seem to show up every year around the same time? Where do they come from, and most of all, how do we avoid them? Here is a list of the most common back-to-school issues that you should be aware of

3 Tips to Help Keep Kids Healthy

Since it’s practically impossible to completely avoid germs altogether, it’s important to take a different approach, and instead be prepared. We can do that with preventative measures, such as hand-washing, and also by boosting our immune systems through diet and supplements. Here are some simple things you can do to help keep your kids healthy this back-to-school season.

Multivitamins

Our intentions are good, but let’s face it, the majority of kids aren’t getting all the vitamins and minerals they need at every meal. That’s why a multivitamin, specially formulated for children, is so important.

Choose a yummy chewable option (such as KidBear Kids Multi Cherry by Jarrow Formulas) or look for gummy vitamins and serve them with breakfast every morning before they leave for school. Multi-vitamins help boost your child’s immune system so they can be better prepared to fight germs, such as the common cold, that they come in contact with during back-to-school.

In addition to a multivitamin, try an elderberry supplement to help boost your child’s immune system. We recommend Elder-Mune Sambucus Elderberry Gummies by Zhou Nutrition, or for a yummy liquid supplement, try Kids Black Elderberry Syrup Alcohol-Free by Gaia Herbs.

Probiotics

It’s not always the first thing we think of, but a child’s probiotic is a very important part of supporting a healthy immune system. (We recommend HMF Fit Your School Probiotic by Genestra.)

Not only can it help promote a healthy immune response to illness, but it will help heal the system as it’s getting over one as well. Probiotics are great for fighting stomach illnesses, constipation and diarrhea. They are also really important after a child has been on antibiotics to introduce good bacteria back into the gut.

Some kids probiotics, like HLC Fit for School Probiotic by Pharmax, even come formulated with vitamins C and D for extra immune support.

Education

Talking to your kids about how to avoid and prevent the spread of germs will go a long way towards keeping your family healthy when they go back-to-school. Here are some of the key things you should bring up with them before any public outing.

  • Wash your hands often, or use sanitizer.
  • Do not share hairbrushes, hats, or accessories.
  • Keep your hands out of your mouth, eyes, and nose.
  • Never drink after someone else.
  • Do not share bites of food.
