Immune Support: Apricot, Bee Propolis, Versus Elderberry

Three of the most common natural ingredients found in supplements for immune support are apricot, bee propolis, and elderberry. With the wide variety of products claiming to support the immune system, you may find yourself wondering, is apricot, bee propolis, or elderberry better for immune support?

Let’s look at the potential benefits of each.

Apricot, Bee Propolis, versus Elderberry

Apricots, either dried or fresh, are a delicious way to help provide your body with the nutrients it needs to support overall health and wellbeing. Apricots are also one of the healthiest fruits available.

A small-sized apricot provides you with your daily value of many nutrients. This includes 12% of vitamin C, 12% of vitamin A, and 6% of potassium. Vitamins A and C are important for their roles in supporting the immune system, reducing the risk of infections, as well as providing support for microbial challenges. Apricots are also a good source of iron, with a handful of dried apricots containing about 2.7 grams of iron. Iron is a critical mineral that, among many other things, our bodies use to help fight off infections by fighting against harmful bacteria.

Bee Propolis

Bee propolis is a waxy mixture naturally produced by honey bees from “substances collected from parts of plants, buds, and exudates.” Bees use propolis to construct, repair, and protect their hives. But bee propolis also has applications for humans. Because of its antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, bee propolis is used in a wide variety of formulations made for treating and preventing the common cold, upper respiratory tract infections, common cold, flu-like infections, and more. It’s bee propolis’ powerful antioxidant activity, in particular, that help it play a significant role in regulating and supporting immune system health.

Elderberry, the dark purple berry produced by European and black elder trees, has a long history in natural and folk medicine to treat colds and flu. There is some preliminary research that suggests that elderberry may, in fact, help relieve symptoms of flu or other upper respiratory infections, but more research is needed to examine its efficacy in other health contexts.

However, there is some promising research involving elderberry as a means for immune support; a 2016 study on the effect of elderberry on the severity and duration of cold symptoms found that those taking elderberry extract experienced a significant reduction in the symptoms of their cold – both in severity and in duration.

So which is best? Apricot, bee propolis, or elderberry? Bee propolis probably has the most impressive nutritional, immune-system boosting potential, but don’t rule out apricots. Apricots provide a wide number of vitamins and minerals our bodies need to stay healthy and fight off sickness.
