If youâre at all naturally savvy, youâve heard or read about kombucha more than a few times.
So whatâs the big deal about kombucha anyway?
Why do people drink it? The answer is simple â it has great health benefits.
However, before we dive into our featured recipes, you should know kombucha is not for everyone – there are some things you need to know before you go âkombucha-krazy.â
Kombucha Safety
The first thing you’ll want to do is read our previous post Kombucha Safety – Should You Make Your Own? In the post, Kasey shares valuable information on precautions you’ll need to take if you want to save money on commercial kombucha drinks by making your own.
Making kombucha is easy. I’ve made it numerous times, but you do need to follow the important basic steps to make it properly and safely. There’s a wealth of information on the web to help you learn the ropes.
As noted in Kasey’s post, you might want to pick up Stephen Leeâs Kombucha Revolution. Itâs 151 pages of valuable information on how to make your own and do it right. There’s always more to learn!
I have other favorite sites, like Donna Schwenk’s Cultured Food Life. The story about her journey to better health is absolutely remarkable. Grab a tissue and take the time to watch.
She affirms my passion for natural health. People need hope! Sick people can get better!
The key ingredient in kombucha (besides the good things like glucosamine and B vitamins) is the amazing good bacteria it contains that nourishes your body and helps you maintain good health.
Here are six kombucha recipes that are sure to inspire you on your journey to better health with fermented foods. Enjoy!
1. Coffee Kombucha
This recipe hails from Cultured Food Life and was created by Donna Schwenk’s daughter, Maci.
I love coffee and am always looking for excuses to drink more of it. Donna’s coffee kombucha nails it!
The recipe calls for using coffee instead of the usual tea. The fermenting makes the coffee more alkaline so it’s not so acidic and hard on your stomach, and it’s loaded with healthy probiotics!
Just remember you can’t use the SCOBYÂ again like you can when you make kombucha tea. Get the full recipe here.
2. Spiced Apple Kombucha
The apple crop here in Wisconsin was plentiful this year, so this Spiced
Apple Kombucha recipe from Sweet Potatoes & Social Change caught my attention.
Since apples are on the EWG Dirty Dozen list for high levels of pesticides, I’d normally recommend you use organic apples, but another fascinating thing you’ll learn about cultured foods is they can help break down pesticides.
It’s as though nature gave us a backup plan when organic foods aren’t available – you just need to ferment! Get the full scoop in this article from GreenMedInfo.com.
This recipe is perfect for fall, but good any time of year. Get the complete recipe and more from Samantha here.
3. Pumpkin Pie Kombucha
Looking to make your Thanksgiving a bit healthier? How about serving Pumpkin Pie Kombucha from PickleMeToo.com. (Yes, you can ferment your own pickles!)
This website has great information on nourishing foods for the whole family. I’ll be visiting them again.
Made with pumpkin puree, cinnamon stick, cloves and nutmeg, this recipe could end up being a holiday favorite.
4. Ginger Kombucha
Do you know how good ginger is for you? Ginger is often used as a safe and
effective way to minimize morning sickness in pregnant women, and is useful for motion sickness, too. It’s great for gastrointestinal relief, and has many other benefits you can find on the World’s Healthiest Foods.
I love the way this recipe from TheKitchn.com is introduced: “Kombucha and ginger are a dynamic duo of superhero proportions. Kombucha is delightfully tart and fizzy; ginger brings a warm and spicy side-kick punch.”
Pick up some fresh ginger at your favorite market and give this recipe a try!
5. Kombucha-rita – The Probiotic Margarita
Don’t you love a good margarita?
I know I do, but as noted in the comments from WholeGreenLove.com, “they have a bad wrap for being made with sugary corn syrupy ‘lime flavored’ liquids. Boo.”
Not any more!
Joanna and Laura have made a healthy version of a not-so-healthy adult beverage! Check them out and enjoy the full recipe here.
6. Kombucha with Pomegranate & Orange
Finally, we can’t leave out something for the upcoming holiday celebrations
and a toast to the New Year. After all, it’s almost November.
StupidEasyPaleo.com shares a great recipes perfect for holiday celebrations.
Made with a good quality pomegranate juice and fresh orange juice, this recipe won’t just taste festive – it looks festive, too.
You’ll get a bonus Cranberry Cinnamon Kombucha recipe with the Pomegranate Orange recipe here. Bring on the cheer!
