19 Things You Don’t Know About Vaccines

19 Things You'll Want to Know Before You Vaccinate

The whole subject of vaccination is very polarizing. Are you pro-vaccine or pro-informed choice?

All I hope is that parents do their homework and research vaccines the way they research a new car, computer or smart phone. That they be informed just as you would before you have surgery and consider the risks and benefits. More parents are starting to question vaccines with good reason.

Both my grandfathers were doctors, so I grew up in a home that honored mainstream medicine. Chiropractors were a “no-no” and I wanted to be a “good” mother so I vaccinated my kids. Now, I’m a skeptic. In my 50+ years, I’ve seen too much not to question.

Vaccines are drugs and every year more than 100,000 people die from legally prescribed, properly dosed medications.  Merck pharmaceuticals made the drug Vioxx that killed 60,000 people. They also make 15 vaccines.

{{Privy:Embed campaign=442441}}

Today, children receive up to 49 doses of 14 vaccines before age six. That’s more than 22 times the number of vaccines given in 1983.  An increase of over 200%!  By the time your kids are 18 yrs., they’ll receive 70 doses of 18 types of vaccines.

In the 1980’s, when I was raising my kids, autism rates were one or two per 10,000. Autism rates today are 1 in 50. You can draw your own conclusions on whether or not there is a correlation between vaccines and autism.

Medical doctors are very convincing when it comes to vaccines. After-all, what parent doesn’t want to protect their child from illness?  Still, there are many things parents don’t think about before they make this all-too-important decision. We’d all love to have the confidence in modern medicine to freely vaccinate without reservation – but experience tells us differently.

19 Things You Don’t Know About Vaccines

So – here’s my list of things you might not know and I hope you’ll consider in making an informed choice on vaccinating your children:

  1. If your child is harmed or killed by a vaccine you cannot sue the manufacturer of the vaccine or the doctor.
  2. If your child is harmed or killed by a vaccine, you’re on your own for medical expenses and therapies.
  3. If you think VAERS (the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System) will provide a safety net, guess again. Two of every three submissions are excluded and the cases that are accepted linger in court for years. The system is designed to make you give up.
  4. Having said that, for those brave parents who fought to the end, more than 2.5 BILLION  has been paid out in compensation. Where does the money in VAERS come from? From YOU – every vaccine has an excise tax (from $.75 – $2.25 depending on the vaccine) that you pay.  Shouldn’t the drug companies pay that? Silly me, that would take money from the lobbyists!
  5. Vaccines contain very questionable ingredients  like thimerosol which is 50% mercury (no it hasn’t been removed from all shots and others contain trace amounts), aluminum, formaldehyde,  polysorbate 80, antibiotics, yeast protein, fetal bovine serum, monosodium glutamate, chick embryo cell culture, aborted fetal tissue (WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts), egg protein, latex rubber, Latham medium derived from bovine casein (think milk allergy!) monkey kidney cells, 2-phenoxyethanol, pig blood, horse blood, rabbit brain and many more. And now, the newest flu shot contains dog DNA.
  6. Vaccines are publicly traded pharmaceuticals – drug companies have an obligation to the shareholders to generate revenue.
  7. Because you can’t sue the drug company for a vaccine reaction this is where the drug companies are putting their future profits. Forget new antibiotics, lets pump out more vaccines!
  8. Just the Hep-B vaccine given to newborns makes ONE BILLION dollars annually for Merck and unless you’re an IV drug user or a prostitute, your child really doesn’t need it.
  9. Once you vaccinate (and damage is done) you can’t un-vaccinate.
  10. Thanks to better hygiene, clean water and sanitation, childhood illnesses like polio, measles and mumps, were all declining before the introduction of the vaccines (too much credit is given to vaccine efficacy!)
  11. If you have older children and are considering adding the Gardasil HPV vaccine to your child’s vaccine schedule, it might interest you to know that 121 young girls (and one boy) have died from this vaccine and there have been nearly 27,500 injuries.
  12. Read the package insert on the vaccine your child may receive BEFORE it’s given – pay close attention to the adverse reactions.
  13. If you decide to vaccinate make certain you ask these eight questions from the National Vaccine Information Network before you proceed.
  14. Vaccines by-pass the body’s normal immune response. When a child gets an illness like measles they have lifelong natural immunity. Vaccines provide only temporary immunity.
  15. Antibodies in the blood stream do not necessarily mean immunity. This is likely why many outbreaks of measles and whooping cough occur in fully vaccinated children.
  16. Vaccinating a child for chickenpox increases the chances of shingles as an adult.
  17. Not all doctors think vaccines are safe and effective.
  18. If you want to know if the number of vaccines your child will receive are right for your child, use this Vaccine Ingredients Calculator.
  19. If you do vaccinate, learn to recognize the signs of a vaccine reaction.

Documented Vaccine Reactions

Here is an infographic with information taken straight from the package insert of vaccines and other reputable sources. It also highlights the history of the vaccine schedule and the potentially harmful ingredients in them.

How to Minimize the Risk of Vaccine Damage

If you must vaccinate there are things you can to to minimize the risk of vaccine damage and this article from GreenMed Info will go into greater detail, but here are just a few:

  • Delay vaccination until age two.
  • Never vaccinate a sick child.
  • Make sure the vaccines are free of thimerosol (mercury) BTW, even vaccines labeled “thimerosol free” are allowed to have trace amounts of it in them.
  • Space them out and avoid multiple combinations.
  • Give your child vitamin C before & after the vaccine – 1,000 mg. 4x a day.

The MMR – autism Drama in the News

The CDC COVER UP from a 2004 study showing MMR vaccine causes autism was published on CNN. But somehow, the story got deleted and reported as abuse.

From the Autism Action Network’s John Gilmore,

“For those of you who haven’t heard the news, William W. Thompson, Ph. D., a senior research scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided information to several sources alleging that he and his colleagues, who are all senior people at the CDC, altered a 2004 study to cover-up the finding that African-American male toddlers who received the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) shot under the age of 36 months had 340% more autism than those who got the MMR older than 36 months. The alteration to the study was allegedly done to hide the relationship between the MMR and autism. Even after the alleged deception, the study still showed that children who received the MMR at a younger age had a higher autism rate than those who received it later in life. Yet the study was marketed as showing no affect.”

From Pubmed.gov, you can read the updated abstract:

Measles-mumps-rubella vaccination timing and autism among young african american boys: a reanalysis of CDC data

And don’t miss this awesome editorial from Kelly Brogan, MD. on the topic.

Also, here are 28 scientific studies that back up Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s research on the vaccine/autism correlation.

28-studies that back up Andrew Wakefield's research

There’s plenty more I could add on this topic, but this will give you enough to ponder for now.

Has anything listed here made you question your decision to vaccinate? Am I off base? Post a comment below!

It’s my nature to keep the peace – but I’m willing to face the firing line on this one – because it’s a matter of life and death.

Thank you for this. So many people have no clue. My niece had a PKU done after birth. It came back normal. After getting her DTP she had a seizure and is now mildly mentally retarded. So my oldest was fully vaccinated until he was in school then I stopped. My other two are almost fully vaccinated first three years, but never had all. My daughter has studied this out and only gave my grand baby the first round…hasn’t given anymore and won’t. I feel SO bad because I just trusted the medical community. They don’t even know. I told my mom and dad’s doctor that the grand’s were not being vaccinated…he said oh that’s real bad. I then asked him if he knew what was in them…he said no. I told him some of the ingredients and urged him to check out the CDC website. It is so frustrating to tell someone to look into it and they just ignore you. But it is right there for all the world to see.

If you do not educate yourself, who will? Do not rely on the Alphabet soup groups to teach you.

Diane, we’re so very sorry to hear of your niece’s tragic seizure from the DTP vaccine. It is a great injustice that individuals like your niece (and their families) must live a lifetime of suffering because they were pressured to vaccinate. Clearly, the one-size-fits-all vaccination program has some serious flaws. Your daughter is wise to be cautious about vaccinating and you’re a good mom to support her in her decision! Thanks much for commenting – sorry I didn’t see it sooner!

Provaccination: Pros:- By getting vencicatad children shouldn’t get these diseases.( The video says we get 35 needles in 6 years to fight 16 diseases in there first years of life). This is a Pro.- We have health care which is covered unlike the states so we should take advantage of this oppertunite to make sure our kids have the best protection possible.- Can get it done right at school by a certified nurse. ( Sometimes)- There is no follow up appointment needed- its on your recordCons:- Children become scared of needles however they eventually get over it.- It can be inconvient for the parents.AntivaccinationPro:- No pain for the child from needles.Con:- There is odd pressure from other parents- Child can be suspended, or kicked out of school.- Childs at risk for contracting a disease.- High risk especially in international travel or being around other unimmunized children.Yes, I would choose to vaccinate my child because it would be difficult to deal with a disease in the family. My family knows what it is like to lose someone to infections and diseases so why risk the life of someone else. The risks to your child are to great because they play with other children daily at school who maybe be carriers as for society its great because they can recieve a disease thru work, travel etc. Whether its airborne or contracted through touch. Yes I believe the doctors and concerned parents because if my child was vencicatad in a class with unvaccinated children I would also be concerned about the risk. Im sure stabilizers are in medicalin items but i havn’t heard of a death yet so why not keep using them.I agree with Shelagh. Yes we should let mother nature deal with some of the viruses like flu and chicken pox . she is right eventually our bodies will become immune to these vaccinations and it will not fight them off.

Ms. Bloomer, thank you so much for taking the time to cover this in a thorough way! I did the research on vaccines before my first son was born 14 years ago and did not like what I learned. I decided to wait until he was two years old, and then individually vaccinate for the key ones that he was likely to need, HepB and Chicken Pox he would never get, and due to the risk, no live polio and never the MMR combination vaccine. I was FURIOUS to find that the hospital took him right after birth and vaccinated him for 8 things without my knowing that I had consented by birthing there! Make sure you make your preferences known in writing and watch carefully that delivery hospitals honor them, if you decide to vaccinate on a different schedule, or decide not to vaccinate! When my second son came alone two years later, something was terribly wrong from the moment of birth and we were unsure of why his APGARS (neo-natal tests) were so low. We decided not to vaccinate at all until we knew more and halted all vaccines on my older son, in case it was something genetically inherited. My oldest had gotten mildly sick or very irritable with the few individual vaccines he’d received. As it turns out, both boys have genetically inherited Mitochondrial Disease and the vaccines could have very likely challenged their systems and low liver function to it’s limits. Be informed….it really doesn’t hurt to wait those two years and then proceed if that’s your choice. It is not an all or none decision; you can select only certain vaccines.First be very informed! – then listen to your inner voice.

Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comments, Narie, you clearly have a solid understanding of what true health is (your comments on the Celiac disease post are also testimony to that!) I’m sorry to hear of the experience you had in the hospital where your son was vaccinated without your consent. I always tell new parents not to let the babies out of their sight! It’s so sad. Your personal testimony says far more than my post and I thank you for sharing your experience and for cautioning parents to do their research. Sadly, we hear stories like yours often – but many didn’t learn as you did and are now dealing with the tragic consequences of a vaccine damaged child. Keep educating others as you are – you are so right about the association between good health and the gut. How wonderful that you recovered from an autoimmune disorder and are feeling so well. If only we could convince others that there is hope in natural healing! Thanks again!

Great article. I’ve been looking into vaccines more and more lately as my husband and I start thinking about having kids. Interesting to think of any cases of vaccines hurting children that actually get through are paid by taxpayers… even though drug companies are for-profit establishments with shareholders to think about. Frustrating.

    • Mary Bloomer September 18, 2013 at 11:49 am #

Well said, Mariah. I often wonder how different things might be in the medical community if vaccines were no longer publicly traded.(Such a big profit maker for the clinics and pharmaceutical companies!) Maybe parents wouldn’t be so pressured and we’d have fewer children with so many health issues. Thanks for weighing-in, and all the best to you in raising your family. Sounds like you’ll make a very wise mother!

  4. tom October 1, 2013 at 9:49 pm #

Amen!!!!!! Most doctors today will talk down, around and over you so they can get you out of the office and boy don’t even question them on anything especially vaccines. It would be nice to go in and hand them a folder of info that says get educated and don’t be ignorant. The whole idea of being a doctor is to protect the health and well being of your patients. I think we have lost that concept decades ago.

    • Mary Bloomer October 2, 2013 at 4:14 pm #

You are so right! The actual science on the efficacy of vaccines has been lost on the medical community. Vaccines are sadly driven by profit margins. There are still caring docs out there, but they are pressured into pushing pharmaceuticals on the patients. And then there are really arrogant ones who forget who the customer is! Thanks for commenting!

Nice “sources”. If by sources you mean crackpot websites, and by crackpot websites I include this one.

Mormons and the Daily Mail. Hee hee.

    • Mary Bloomer October 25, 2013 at 10:25 am #

Well, Bob, if you took the time to actually read the articles posted you’d find that they contain very reputable “sources” like these below referenced in the Pathways to Family Wellness article: How Do Vaccines Work? Immune Mechanisms and Consequences. If you can argue with this data – be my guest. I won’t even favor your silly comment about Mormons with a reply. Have a good day!

More and more like them thing that it’s an urgent thing and that there is something weird going on with the rmedicine as a whole. I would say that if you look in the chiropractic department, for the last 3 years more and more new firms have become a part of it and there is a big wave of firm coming in this niche even the RLD Chiro Ltd. and http://www.bestverobeachchiropractors.com have talked about it.
