Horny-Goat-Weed-Tea

If you’ve wondered if there’s a reason behind the odd naming of the horny goat weed plant, you’re probably not alone; and you’re on to something. Horny goat weed is a fascinating plant, and one that’s worth learning about all the way from its potential health benefits to its unique name.

Horny goat weed is the common name of the large, leafy Chinese plant that is otherwise known as epimedium, or yin yang huo. Epimedium has historically been used to support healthy libido, and thus, it earned the humorous nickname of ‘horny goat weed.’ In fact, the legend goes that it was a Chinese goat herder who gave epimedium its nickname after noticing that his herd were engaged in increased sexual activity after eating the plant.

Is there anything behind the insinuations of the name horny goat weed? Can horny goat weed really support healthy sexual and reproductive health, and if so, what is the best way to take it?

Benefits of Horny Goat Weed

Before you brew yourself a cup of horny goat weed tea, you may be interested in this plant’s potential health benefits.

Horny Goat Weed and Sexual Health

Scientists have investigated the potential effects of horny goat weed, knowing that it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat erectile dysfunction for centuries. One study looked at the effect that icariin, the active component of horny goat weed, had on the erectile functions of rats with nerve injuries. The study found that Icariin (and by extension, horny goat weed) “may have beneficial effects on erectile function” following a nerve injury.

Other studies have examined the way that horny goat weed can enhance the production of bioactive nitric oxide, which mimics the effects of testosterone, again suggesting that horny goat weed may support healthy erectile function.

In fact, horny goat weed is one of the most common natural ingredients (along with Yohimbe, ginseng, Ginkgo biloba, maca, and L-arginine) used in sexual enhancement products.

While many of these studies focus on horny goat weed and erectile dysfunction, don’t think that this means that only men can benefit. Horny goat weed is believed to increase libido in both women and men.

And if sexual health isn’t your focus, studies have also shown that horny goat weed helps to lessen normal bone loss in women who have gone through menopause.

Horny goat weed is also a good source of antioxidants.

Horny Goat Weed Tea

One common way to introduce horny goat weed into your diet is horny goat weed tea. Horny goat weed tea is an herbal tea, which (in essence) means that it is made by adding the leaves of the plant into boiling water. But it is not technically a ‘tea’ since you won’t be using tea leaves. Instead, add the various dried horny goat weed into hot to extract the nutrients. This method of taking horny goat weed is considered preferential as it doesn’t require digestion, and thus offers optimal absorption.

Some more benefits of herbal tea? It’s caffeine free, sugar free, and all natural. If you’re the kind of person who needs a warm mug in your hands on a winter morning, or something soothing to wind down at night, then herbal teas offer an excellent alternative to other beverages, like coffee. Or if you still need your cup of joe, trying adding horny goat weed in your coffee brew.

There are several ways to make horny goat weed tea. You can purchase prepared tea bags, which often combine horny goat weed with other (delicious) herbs, like licorice.

You can also make horny goat weed tea yourself. Simply grind the horny goat weed into small pieces, or a powder (you may purchase some in powdered form). Add the horny goat weed to your tea diffuser, and let it steep in hot water for at least 5 minutes. Add honey or your favorite sweetener.

You can also purchase horny goat weed extract, tinctures, or capsules.
