Find out how the most crucial astaxanthin benefits to your health.

What are you having for dinner this evening? If you said shrimp, salmon or even lobster, you’ll be taking in a powerful carotenoid called astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is responsible for giving those kinds of seafood and a few others their signature pinkish-red hue. And the reported astaxanthin benefits that you’ll be getting from your meal are plentiful. Find out more in this blog post!

According to the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Research (IJPSR), studies have shown that “astaxanthin has potential health-promoting effects in the prevention and treatment of various diseases.” While further clinical research is needed, the potential health implications of astaxanthin benefits are profound – supporting everything from the health of the heart, brain, eyes, gut, reproductive system, skin, and much more.

Antioxidant Support and Other Astaxanthin Benefits

What’s the secret behind the potential astaxanthin benefits to your health? In short, astaxanthin is an antioxidant. Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals that cause oxidation, which affects the development of many health challenges, including “various diseases,” as the IJPSR states. Antioxidants are important because they help prevent oxidation in the first place. In addition, astaxanthin benefits also include supporting:

01. Skin Health

Suzy Cohen, R.Ph., a licensed pharmacist, writes that astaxanthin is akin to an “internal sunscreen.” She explains that the carotenoid reduces UVA damage from the sun by penetrating the skin cells and providing support for healthy-looking skin.

Cohen also points out that “astaxanthin reduces the inflammatory compounds that drive many chronic diseases. Even though it’s 100 percent natural, astaxanthin works like some prescription analgesics, but without the risk of addiction, GI [gastrointestinal tract] bleeds or heartburn.”

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements and cannot prove efficacy, studies suggest a correlation between astaxanthin providing temporary relief from occasional feelings of fullness, itching, or discoloration of skin.

02. Heart Health

The antioxidant properties of astaxanthin are widespread. By helping the body fight free radical damage, it’s protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage, which has potential cardiovascular benefits.

03. Eye Health

A study on mice, published by the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology,  found that astaxanthin “had neuroprotective effects against retinal damage,” partly because of its antioxidant properties. Specifically, similar to other carotenoids such as beta-carotene, astaxanthin is reported to help prevent age-related macular degeneration by promoting healthy vision. However, the IJPSR reports that astaxanthin has antioxidant activity as high as ten times more than other carotenoids.

04. Muscle Health

Astaxanthin is also believed by some to promote athletic performance and exercise recovery by supporting muscle health and protecting the body from fatigue. “Just like salmon making the heroic upstream swim,” Cohen suggests, “astaxanthin can help athletes do their best. Pure natural astaxanthin is indicated for recovery of muscles, better endurance, enhanced strength and improved energy levels.” However, more human clinical trials are needed to support this claim.

05. Immune System Health

Admit it: We don’t always eat like we should, drink enough water, or exercise enough. And those things – or lack thereof – can weaken our immune system. Astaxanthin helps to move toxic substances like mercury and immune-weakening free radicals through and out of the body, supporting natural detoxification processes of the liver and promoting a healthy immune system.

If lobster isn’t on the menu for dinner tonight, you can easily support your diet and healthy lifestyle with astaxanthin benefits in a softgel, tablet, capsule, or liquid dietary supplement from Natural Healthy Concepts.
