New "Select" Study says Fish Oil Will Give You Prostate Cancer... Really?!

“Eating a lot of oily fish or consuming omega supplements may not be good for a man’s health.”

That’s the lead-in sentence in the article Omega 3 Fish Oils Linked to Prostate Cancer in Medical News Today. Rather attention-getting, isn’t it?

Medical News Today reported on the research paper from The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Plasma Phospholipid Fatty Acids and Prostate Cancer Risk in the SELECT Trial and since then, there has been quite the flow of comments about the validity of the research, whether or not big pharma funded the study, etc.

I thought it might be helpful to share some of the feedback from the nutrition industry so you can factor in a variety of key points before deciding whether you should stop consuming fish or supplementing with Omega-3.

When the paper’s senior author and member of the Fred Hutch Public Health Sciences Division, Alan Kristal, Dr.P.H, said: “we’ve shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful,” there is bound to be a response from the nutraceutical industry. Thank goodness! We have had several companies in the industry comment about this whole controversy.

Below a couple physicians in the industry have chimed in…

Dr. Russell Jaffe, Founder & CEO of Perque counters:

“We agree on the importance of making clinical and policy decision based on “rational, scientific medicine (and medicines) whose efficacy has been confirmed in impartial, reproducible clinical trials.

However, in this recent trial, Dr Kristal’s team was “unclear to the mechanism Omega 3 fats could cause cancer. It was also not possible to tell for certain whether the elevated blood levels were due to men taking supplements or eating fish rich in omega-3s”. More importantly they do not distinguish sources and forms of omega 3 as we discuss below. They also do not distinguish increases in inactive omega 3 precursors (ALA) and active forms (EPA and DHA).

Scientists like Drs. Kristal and Offit are quite selective in the studies they cite and their analysis appears to be incomplete in many ways. To read more on Dr. Jaffe’s take on this study and others by Dr. Kristal and Offit, click here.”

 Doctor Murray writes – important considerations of this data include the following:

“This study is not consistent with other studies; see in-depth discussion here.

  • The study did NOT include information or documentation of fish or fish oil intake in the study group. It was NOT set up initially to evaluate these factors, hence its relevance is not as significant as studies designed to specifically determine the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on prostate cancer risk.
  • There is no evidence that anybody in this study took fish oil supplements or even ate fish.
  • In usual circumstances, plasma levels of EPA and DHA reflect very recent intake and are considered a poor bio-marker of long-term omega-3 intake.
  • Patients with prostate cancer may have only recently increased their fish and/or fish oil consumption.
  • Fish and fish oil ingestion produces a big rise in plasma omega-3 levels in about 4.5 hours and washes out around 48 hours.
  • The data may reflect cancer activity rather than a causative association. Without dietary history or documentation of fish oil use there is no way of knowing.

The authors conclude that men are at higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer if the total plasma level of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA+DPA+DHA) is greater than 3.68%. If that were true, then aggressive prostate cancer would be a major health concern and the leading cause of death in any country with even moderate fish consumption.

The facts are that population-based studies show just the opposite effect. For example, prostate cancer incidence and death rates are among the lowest known in populations consuming the traditional Japanese or Mediterranean diets, two diets with a relatively high content of EPA+DHA.”

Should I, will you, continue taking Omega-3?

That is the question many who have read and seen various versions of the reported paper will be asking. I personally will continue taking Omega-3 supplements and so will my husband. Granted, I don’t have a risk of prostate cancer but a few family members have experienced, some fatally, a variety of cancers.

There are plenty of studies that suggest it may be beneficial to supplement with Omega-3 and/or consume fish.  Some are cited in Doctor Murray’s article above. Here’s another about Fatty Fish Consumption & Prostate Cancer Risk in the Lancet Dr. Geo mentions in his commentary about this study.

    Japan and other Asian countries consumes more fish and fish oils than people of the United States and has less incidents of prostate cancer. United States though, consumes more process foods, meats and junk foods……Maybe we should investigate this first instead of blaming a substance (fish oil) that has been around longer than the typical american junk food…….

    Hello,
    Japan is the most consumption country of fish oil in the world but Cancer risk is lowest.
    So, I think this latest research that is claim fish oil is going to do harm is an epidemiological study. At best, it can only indicate a relationship, not causation. In this case, the study didn’t even account for known risk factors of prostate cancer.
    Good health for everybody.

    While it is great that data from studies are so widely available, this can be one of the drawbacks. This is one of those cases where a sample correlation can get misconstrued as causation. As you mentioned, the Japanese eat more fish than most other nations, but they have long been shown to have low rates of prostate cancer. The Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil are beneficial for so many reasons (including cholesterol, heart health, and even long-term memory), I just hope that people keep this in mind when they read about this study.

    Omega 3 usually is linked to stave off many diseases. but it is good for some organs of the body and harmful for some others. i have shared a link which says that as per a new study fish oil is not capable to strengthen brain that was believed earlier.

      Unfortunately the article you cite, refers to some research articles but the links to that research only offer ads. I would love to see valid research articles to support your statement. The article you linked to also includes “However, subjects with high levels of omega-3s in their blood exhibited slightly better fine-motor speed and verbal fluency.” Also, “Our study was observational and should not be viewed as a definitive answer on the relationship between omega-3s and cognitive function.”

    New research seems to support the fact that a Low-fat diet & omega-3 linked to reduced prostate cancer aggression. A follow-up study reveals that men suffering from prostate cancer who took fish oil supplements alongside a low-fat diet demonstrated changes in their cancer tissue that may indicate reduced cancer aggression.
