Today, September 29, 2010 is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages. The goal of this unique national awareness day is to encourage women to take control of their health: to learn the facts they need to make smart health choices, and to make time for regular physical activity. Today across the U.S. more than 1,400 groups will host women’s health and fitness events at health clubs, park and recreation districts, schools, hospitals, churches, senior centers, retirement communities, local health and service organizations, and other community locations. An estimated 40,000 to 100,000 women are expected to participate in these local activities. Go Women!
Here’s the facts:
• According to the World Health Organization, in 2005, roughly half of the 17.2 million victims of heart disease and stroke – the world’s biggest killer – were WOMEN.
• Current 2010 American Heart Association statistics alert this year about 1.2 million Americans will have a first or recurrent heart attack – our nation biggest killer – and 452,000 of these people will die (38%). Heart disease is the single leading cause of death for WOMEN. In fact, more then one in three adult WOMEN have some form of cardiovascular disease.
• 2007 American Heart Association statistics alert about 5.7 million survive stroke in the United States. WOMEN account for about 6 in 10 stroke deaths. Stroke is the third leading cause of death.

If you’re not already doing so, today’s the perfect day for all WOMEN to start making these smart health choices:
Exercise! Make exercise a regular part of your life. Each day, enjoy at least 30 minutes of physical activity that raises your heart beat. Try brisk walking (with the family, friend or the dog), dancing (with the stars!), aerobics, cycling, or some sports like tennis (Serena would be cheering you on!).
Drink lots of water! At least six glasses a day.
Eat healthily. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, a variety of whole organic grains and lean proteins. Avoid (eliminating is best) sugars, especially artificial sweeteners, wheat grains, excess fats, especially saturated fats.
Fortify your diet with nutrients & vitamins. Plan your diet to fulfill more than 100% of the daily recommended nutrients, or take a a good multi-vitamin to ensure you’re getting enough of the essential vitamins, especially vitamin C (protects against infection and boosts immunity, a necessity to have on hand during this cold and flu season time of year), D (our body captures and stores vitamin D from the ultraviolet-B rays in sunlight unless you live in the northern hemisphere this time of year, then you will not be synthesizing Vitamin D), E, folic acid, iron, and iodine.
Plenty of sleep. Dr. Oz recommends at least six hours! Our nutritionist recommends at least 5 consecutive hours to help replenish the adrenals. Consecutive sleep hours are the key for your body to rest and re-fuel. Most people really do need at least 7 or 8 hours daily.
